LEADING SIRES AND DAMS AT THE
2012 SPORT HORSE NATIONALS

The 2012 Sport Horse Nationals Leading Sires and Dams represented many different bloodlines popular in the breed, but all are from lines noted for their athletic talent. It’s fascinating to note how differently many of the top ranked sport horses differ in pedigree from their main ring counterparts.

Two long time successful American breeding programs were represented by many of the winning horses. Varian Arabians of California had eight winners of all Varian breeding and 12 who were half-Varian, as well as many who showed influence from the great Varian sire line that began with U.S. National Champion Stallion Bay-Abi++ in the early 1960s. He was also a U.S. Top Ten Western Pleasure and English Pleasure winner and his descendants have won in all disciplines in which Arabians compete, including racing, endurance, and all show ring classes! In modern Arabian breeding the Bay-Abi++ grandsons Bey Shah+ Huckleberry Bey++ have been most influential, and in addition to the Varian bred stallions to whom many of the 2012 Sport Horse National winners trace, 13 additional sires of winners are of the Bay-Abi++ sire line, including the Huckleberry Bey++ sons Hucks Legacy, Hucklebey Berry+/, H A Huckster+, and Hey Hallelujah++// as well as the stallions Showkayce+, Showgun PGN++//, Sshameless++, and NV Beau Bey, who trace to Bay-Abi++ through Bey Shah+.

The second long time American breeder who most influenced the show’s winners is Bazy Tankersley of Al-Marah Arabians. 23 of the winners were of all Al-Marah breeding, and one horse was of half Al-Marah lineage. Al-Marah’s program has focused on linebreeding to Skowronek, the Polish superstar who was the linchpin of the Crabbet Stud in England. In early years Al-Marah linebred to Skowronek through his sons *Raffles and *Raseyn, and later incorporated the blood of *Count Dorsaz and *Ranix, both sons of Rissalix imported from England, to the herd. Later introduction of Spanish lines included the use of imports from Australia, including the multiple National Champion Sport Horse Stallion *Bremervale Andronicus++/, who blends Spanish and Crabbet lines. One of the most successful nicks for Mrs Tankersley has been the cross of the inbred *Raseyn stallion Dreamazon+++/ and her homebred AM Sea Captain++, who is linebred to her foundation sire Indraff, a *Raffles son.

Al-Marah also owns four of the Leading Halter Sires at Sport Horse Nationals. They include: AM Power Raid+++/ (AM Double Dream x HH Maid Marian) and AM Double Dream (Dreamazon+++/ x CF Gai Fantasia) sire of three winners apiece; AM Good Oldboy+ (AM Sea Captain++ x AM Tis Beverlie) , sire of 5 winners: and *Bremervale Andronicus++/ (*Desperado AHSA x Bremervale Rhapsody), the top ranked halter sire with six winners. Al-Marah also had three of the top ranked halter & performance sires, including *Bremervale Andronicus++/ who was the Leading Halter & Performance Sire with seven different winning get!

Seven different sires had multiple Sport Horse National winners in halter. Multiple National Champion Dressage Aul Magic+/ (Aulrab x Magic Alarieha) is the sire of the full brothers Aul Turbo Charged+ and Aulways Magic+++//, both top ten winners already discussed with their dam Aur Silver Myst. Desperado V (Huckleberry Bey++ x Daraska) sired Top Ten Sport Horse Gelding Bay Star Bey and Mirage V++++//, the Reserve National Champion Stallion and National Champion Stallion ATH. Desperado V was one of the most influential overall sires at the show, as nine of his grandget also won halter and/or performance titles.

Sundance Kid V (Desperado V x Sweet Shalimar V) sired three of the halter winners: Top Ten Mare and Mare ATH Felenah++ and the National Champion Stallion Mojave Kid++++// and National Champion Mare and Reserve National Champion Mare ATH is Rakhassa Bey+++//, who was also the top winning mare of the show as she had 10 titles, eight of them in performance. Sundance Kid V was also the grandsire of two other National Champions in halter, National Champion Mare ATH Twilight Kolors and National Champion Gelding ATH Everwatch PC.

AM Power Raid+++/ is the sire of three halter winners: Reserve National Champion Mare and Top Ten Mare ATH Powerraid Dawning Sun+++/, Top Ten Mare AM Sweet Victory, and Top Ten Gelding ATH RR Powerplay RR++//. The latter two also have performance titles.

AM Double Dream’s three halter winners include Top Ten Mare ATH Al-Marah So Powerful, Top Ten Stallion and Stallion ATH AM Mighty Hector++++//, and National Champion Gelding and Top Ten Gelding ATH Al-Marah Mighty Brite++++//, all also winners under saddle.

AM Good Oldboy+’s five halter winners are Top Ten Mares and Mares ATH AM Stars Inyour Eyes++++// and AM Capricious Star, Top Ten Stallion ATH AM Fiesty Star+++/, National Champion Two Year Old Colt Payback Flamboyant and Reserve National Champion Yearling Colt/Gelding AM Indeed A Star.

*Bremervale Andronicus++// sired six halter winners, three of them National Champions. They include Top Ten Yearling Colt Ar-Raqis, Top Ten Yearling Filly AM Emilias Samba, Top Ten Gelding and Gelding ATH Al-Marah Prince John+++/, National Champion Two Year Old Filly Al-Marah Jessica, Reserve National Champion Two Year Old Gelding AM Demetrius Cleon, and National Champion Yearling Filly AM Actress Aedile, who is inbred as she is out of his 3/4 sister *Bremervale Heiress.

The Leading Performance Sires at Sport Horse Nationals include two bred by Al-Marah, three bred by Varian Arabians, two pure Polish stallions, one straight Spanish stallion, a Brazilian import, a *Bask++ son and U.S. National Champion Stallion Echo Magnifficoo, who is best known for his National level halter winners but has also sired two U.S. National Champion Jumpers and a National Champion in reining.

Baywatch V++ (Sundance Kid V x Berryantka V) is linebred to Huckleberry Bey++ and had an excellent show career in which he was named Canadian National Champion Junior Stallion and U.S. Top Ten Country Pleasure. He was exported to South Africa in 2010. His winners at the 2012 Sport Horse Nationals are Top Ten Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse RC Vinn Diesel (who is of all Varian breeding) and National Champion Gelding ATH and Sport Horse Under Saddle Everwatch PC.

Monogramm (Negatraz x *Monogramma) has sired World and U.S. National Champions in halter and is also an excellent sire of sport horse competitiors. His two winners at the show are Top Ten Third and Fourth Level Dressage Bonne Vivant (also a Top Ten Stallion) and Annapolis++//, who had six titles in working hunter, hunter hack and sport horse under saddle, four of them National Championships. Both Bonne Vivant and Annapolis++// are pure Polish. Monogramm also had two sons who sired winners at the show-*Kordelas, who sired both halter and under saddle winners, and *Ganges, sire of Top Ten Mare and Mare ATH Fellanaka.

The linebred *Bask++ son Bask Flame, well-known for his National winners in saddleseat competition, is also a successful sport horse sire. His winners were Top Ten Second Level Dressage ATR and AOTR Wesleys Chance and Top Ten Sport Horse Show Hack ATR Roxy Music+/.

U.S. National Champion Stallion Echo Magnifficoo (Aladdinn Echo x SS Magnolia) is the sire of Top Ten Training Level Dressage and Training Level Dressage AOTR Echo Magniffied (a first time National winner) and MA Alis Gold, Top Ten Jumper and Speed Jumper and National Champion Jumper ATR with an 11 year old girl aboard!

The imported Spanish stallion *Granizar (Ghadames x Kadina) sired two performance winners, both of whom had won in sport horse halter as two year olds. His daughter Cleopattraa was a Top Ten Hunter Hack Junior Horse, and his son Czantiago++/ was Reserve National Champion Hunter Hack Junior Horse, Top Ten Hunter Hack AOTR, Green Working Hunter, Training Level Dressage Junior Horse and Training Level Dressage AOTR.

Pure Polish Romeo VF+/ (*Aladdinn x True Love by *Bask++) was a multiple Top Ten Pleasure Driving winner during his show career. He is the sire of three 2012 Sport Horse National winners. His son SS Romeos Legacy++// was a Top Ten Sport Horse Under Saddle ATR and Gelding ATH. Another son, Romeos Shakespear+/ was a Top Ten Sport Horse Show Hack and Sport Horse Show Hack ATR. His daughter Romeos Kandi+// is the National Champion Third and Fourth Level Dressage ATR and a Top Ten winner in Third and Fourth Level Dressage.

Multiple National Champion Western Pleasure and Top Ten Stallion *Khadraj NA+++/ (Ponomarev x Khatreena NA) is primarily Russian in pedigree and is one of the breed’s leading sires of National winners in western pleasure and hunt pleasure. He’s now becoming a force to be reckoned with as a sport horse sire with two National Champion Dressage winners. His three winning get this year are first time National winner RA Kilohana+, a Top Ten Green Working Hunter, Sport Horse Under Saddle ATR, Hunter Hack ATR and Hunter Hack AOTR; National Champion Training Level Dressage Junior Horse and Top Ten Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse ST Shaamrock+++/, and National Champion First Level Dressage, Top Ten Training Level Dressage and Top Ten Sport Horse Mare Abracadraja+++/.

AM Power Raid+++/ sired three performance winners, two of them also halter winners. His son AM Zipy Sharp Shooter achieved his first National level wins with Top Tens in Green Working Hunter, Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse and Hunter Hack Junior Horse. His son Power Play RR++// was Top Ten Second Level Dressage in addition to his halter title, and AM Sweet Victory was U.S. Reserve National Champion Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse in addition to her halter title.

Desperado V sired four of the under saddle winners. His son Bay Star Bey was Top Ten First Level Dressage ATR and AOTR. His son Mirage V++++// was named National Champion Intermediate Dressage I and Top Ten Sport Horse Under saddle and Prix St Georges Dressage in addition to his two National Championships in halter. Another son, Rawhide V+, was Reserve National Champion Training Level Dressage ATR and had six top tens in dressage, sport horse under saddle and sport horse show hack. His son Surreal Bey had six titles including National Champion Working Hunter ATR and Reserve National Champion First Level Dressage ATR with additional Top Tens in green working hunter, sport horse under saddle, dressage and hunter hack.

Like his sire Desperado V, Sundance Kid V also sired four Sport Horse National winners under saddle, two of them National Champions in both halter and performance. His Top Ten winners are Risque Dancer V+, who had four Top Tens in first and second level dressage, and Mi Lucero+/, who had two Top Tens in training level and first level dressage AOTR. Sundance Kid V’s son Mojave Kid++++// was National Champion Sport Horse Show Hack and Top Ten Second Level Dressage. Sundance Kid V’s daughter Rakhassa Bey++++// was the top winning mare of the show with two National Championships in halter and eight performance titles including five National Championships or Reserve National Championships (National Champion Sport Horse Under Saddle ATR, Reserve National Champion Working Hunter AOTR, Sport Horse Under Saddle, Hunter Hack, Hunter Hack AOTR). Rakhassa Bey++++// began her show career in 2012 at age 13, an age at which many show horses are already retired. Sadly this great mare was lost to colic shortly after the show ended.

Top ranked Leading Sport Horse Performance Sire is AM Double Dream, sire of five winners. They include Top Ten Training Level Dressage Junior Horse Al-Marah So Powerful (also a halter winner), Top Ten Training Level Dressage Al-Marah Mighty Brite++++// (also a National Champion in halter), Top Ten Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse and Training Level Dressage Junior Horse Al-Marah Power Parade++, Reserve National Champion Working Hunter and Top Ten Hunter Hack Al-Marah Power Reign++++//, and National Champion Working Hunter, Reserve National Champion Working Hunter ATR, Top Ten Hunter Hack and Hunter Hack ATR AM Mighty Hector+++//.

Charts accompany this article indicating the Leading Halter Sires, Leading Performance Sires, and Leading Halter and Performance Sires. Two stallions who rank on the Leading Halter and Performance Sire Chart have not yet been fully discussed. In addition to his top rank as Leading Halter Sire, *Bremervale Andronicus++// also tops the Halter and Performance Sires as his son AM Chose Othello++ won his first National level awards at the show, with Top Tens in Training Level Dressage Junior Horse and First Level Dressage. The Monogramm son *Kordelas sired Top Ten Yearling Colt/Gelding Kajertan Ibn Kordelas and Top Ten First Level Dressage ATR TA Glacier+, who has previous National wins in reining, proving his versatility! Both of the winning *Kordelas get are pure Polish.

Five mares produced two Sport Horse National winners apiece. Three had winners in both halter and under saddle, and one had two performance winners. The Al-Marah bred mare Reem Al Fala (AM Gypsy Vision x Al Marah Kandu) produced multiple Sport Horse national winners for the second year in a row. Her sire is a son of the predominantly Crabbet *Bremervale Destiny, an Australian import, and her dam is double *Count Dorsaz. She is also linebred to *Raffles. Her winners this year are Top Ten Sport Horse Stallion and Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse Al Marah Swift++ (by Al-Marah Quebec) and National Champion Two Year Old Filly Al-Marah Jessica (by *Bremervale Andronicus++/), who is linebred to *Bremervale Destiny.

Also ranking as a Sport Horse Nationals Leading Dam for the second year in a row is Aur Silver Myst, a CMK (Crabbet/Maynesboro/Kellogg) mare who has two lines to phenomenal Aurab, one of the most influential modern CMK stallions whose descendants .Both of her winners carry three lines to Aurab and two lines to U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure *Lewisfield Magic+/. They are full brothers sired by multiple National Champion dressage Aul Magic+/: Top Ten Sport Horse Stallion Aul Turbo Charged+ and Top Ten Sport Horser Stallion, Sport Horse Stallion ATH, Sport Horse Show Hack, Fourth Level Dressage and Reserve National Champion Third Level Dressage Aulways Magic+++//.

Calika V (*Sanadik El Shaklan x Calaberri Bey V by Huckleberry Bey++) was bred by Varian Arabians. Her sire is half-Egyptian and half-Spanish breeding. She has produced 6 champions, three of them Sport Horse National winners, and two of them won titles this year. Her son RC Vinn Diesel (by Baywatch V++) was a U.S. Top Ten Sport Horse Under Saddle Junior Horse, and his 3/4 brother Mojave Kid++++// (by Sundance Kid V, sire of Baywatch V++) won four titles: U.S. National Champion Sport Horse Stallion and Sport Horse Show Hack and Top Ten Sport Horse Stallion ATH and Second Level Dressage. He now has a total of 20 National titles and many will remember his spectacular triumph in the liberty class at Scottsdale this year!

Sport Horse Nationals Leading Dam Krystal Charm produced 2012 U.S. Top Ten Sport Horse Show Hack ATR Roxy Music+/ (by Bask Flame) and of National Champion Third and Fourth Level Dressage ATR and Top Ten Third and Fourth Level Dressage Romeos Kandi+// (by Romeo VF). Krystal Charm is pure Polish, a daughter of U.S. National Champion Stallion AAF Kaset+ (by U.S. National Champion Stallion *Aladdinn) out of Aristo Kryztina, a daughter of U.S. Top Ten Stallion Ariston and a maternal granddaughter of U.S. Top Ten Park *Wiraz++ and National winner producer *Rokitka. Interestingly Romeos Kandi+// is linebred to *Aladddinn as she is by an *Aladdinn son out of an *Aladdinn granddaughter.

The top ranked Leading Sport Horse Dam for 2012 also achieved this honor in 2011, when she had three winning offspring. This year MSU Eternity (Canadian National Champion Park *Napitok+ x Easter Basket by *Bask++ x *Silfretta) is the dam of two of the National Champions at the show. Both are full siblings sired by U.S. Reserve National Champion Country Pleasure Hucks Legacy (a son of Huckleberry Bey++). MSU Start Again was named National Champion Two Year Old Gelding and Supreme Champion Two Year Old. MSU Starta Legacy++++// was the Reserve Champion Sport Horse Gelding and Gelding ATH and a Top Ten winner in Training Level Dressage AOTR.
